From a single unlabelled photograph.
Legacara came together in Johor Bahru over a question that most families eventually face: what is this object, who does it belong to, and how do we keep the name attached to it? The founding of the organisation grew from a household observation — that three generations of photographs, letters, and domestic documents were accumulating in cabinets and shoeboxes with no clear system for finding them or reading what they meant to the people who had kept them.
The name Legacara draws from the Portuguese word for legacy and the Malay word for manner or way — a notation that heritage work has a considered method behind it. From the beginning, Legacara positioned itself as a curatorial and organisational service: one that sets up the structure and labelling for a household's records without crossing into the territory of professional interpretation or counsel.
Our approach borrows from the conventions of small archival institutions — the ruled label, the accession note, the catalogue entry — and brings them into the domestic setting. A household should not need a museum budget or a professional archivist to organise what it owns. A facilitated session with the right framework and a facilitator who understands the naming conventions and languages of a Malaysian family is often enough.
Legacara is based in Johor Bahru and serves households across the Johor region. We work at the household's pace, in whatever language the family is most comfortable with, and we leave behind printed records that do not depend on a platform or a subscription to remain readable.

Suraya binti Lokman
Lead Facilitator
Suraya has worked in records organisation and household heritage cataloguing for over a decade. She leads single-session engagements and the initial setup of our longer programmes, conducting sessions in English and Bahasa Malaysia.
Chen Wei Tong
Records Facilitator
Wei Tong specialises in Chinese-language household records and is the primary facilitator for sessions where documents are written in traditional or simplified characters. He conducts sessions in Mandarin and English.
Faridah binti Zainal
Catalogue Production
Faridah oversees the production of all printed catalogues and labelled folders. She is responsible for the layout conventions that give Legacara's outputs their archival character, and she supports Jawi-script entries across all programmes.

How we work and what we hold to.
Non-advisory at all times
Legacara does not interpret documents, provide opinions on their meaning or validity, or offer any form of professional counsel. This boundary is maintained throughout every session, without exception.
Household privacy respected
Records, photographs, and documents encountered during sessions are treated with discretion. Nothing is copied, photographed, or retained by Legacara without the explicit written consent of the household.
Printed, durable outputs
Every programme concludes with a printed catalogue or labelled folder. Legacara's outputs are designed to be readable and usable without any software or digital platform, for as long as the household chooses to keep them.
Multilingual accommodation
Sessions and catalogue entries are produced in English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, or Jawi as required. Households with mixed-language records are a common situation; our facilitators work comfortably across all four scripts.
In-home, at the household's pace
Sessions are conducted where the household's objects and papers already live. We do not request that items be transported to an external location, and we adapt the session schedule to the household's circumstances.
Archival catalogue conventions
The structure of our catalogues draws from small archival institutions — ruled entries, accession references, and standardised label formats. The result is a record that has the character of a document, not a hobby project.

A curatorial service for Malaysian households.
Malaysian households carry a particular richness of layered records — documents written across generations in Jawi, Chinese characters, and Romanised script; photographs taken on occasions that current family members can name only approximately; certificates whose significance may have shifted as the household's circumstances changed. Legacara works with this complexity rather than around it.
Our facilitators are based in Johor Bahru and conduct sessions throughout the Johor region. Each session is organisational in character: objects are named and dated where memory permits, documents are labelled and placed in sequence, and photographs are assigned to events and people in a way that future generations can follow. The result is a printed record — a catalogue or a structured folder — that belongs entirely to the household.
The work of recording a household's heritage is not a task that households typically find time for without external structure. A facilitated session provides that structure: a facilitator, a framework, and the time set aside to do the work properly. Legacara programmes range from a single three-hour session to a year-long quarterly engagement, depending on the volume of material and the pace the household prefers.
